Sleeping Bag Tips: Is Mylar Used In Creating Sleeping Bags?

A reader asks:

I noticed that mylar is used in emergency sleeping bags. I also noticed that it is really light. Why isn’t mylar used in created commercial sleeping bags?

    It doesn’t let vapor through. This is an advantage (somewhat) in an emergency where the real insulator is the aluminum in the mylar and the feature is the tiny size of the folded bag.
    But a serious sleeping has got to let the body sweat slowly escape through the pores of the cloth while blocking wind and snow and rain.

    Mylar doesn’t stand up to laundering very well, so it’s not a good choice for sleeping bags that are meant for long-term use. It’s wonderful for situations where being small/light is important, but otherwise, not so much.
